Another Delay on my Dell XPS M1330 Notebook, Maybe.
August 3, 2007 — Drew
My Dell M1330 Notebook was scheduled to be shipped out today. When I checked my order status today Dell has again delayed my order. This time it is a 3 1/2 week delay and they posted a Federal Trade Commission requirement to ask if I want the order canceled.
Due to unforeseen circumstance, we have experienced another delay with your order number 723xxxxx. Our new anticipated ship date will be on or before 8/28/2007. Due to this additional delay, the Federal Trade Commission requires we receive your consent to continue with this order else we will be forced to cancel the order automatically.
You must choose one of the following Links:
Consent to this delay and continue with this order
Consent to this delay and all future delays and continue with this order
Cancel this order
How bad do I really want this laptop? I believe it is going to be an awesome laptop, but I am very displeased with how Dell has handled the M1330 product launch. I ordered my laptop on the second day it was available and at the current expected ship date it estimated to arrive more the 2 months later. That is totally unacceptable.
But wait, the automated telephone system says the order status is in the “boxing stage”. So what is it? Is it in production with a 3 1/2 week delay or is it boxing with shipment in the next day or two?
Let’s see if customer service can give me an answer. Ishrath from Inda is going to do everything she can find me an answer. Great!! (rolling my eyes) Ishrath reassured me my order will be shipped within the next 2 days and she will personally track the order for me and let me know it’s status via email.
Update: My laptop finally arrived on August 8th. Check out the ongoing saga in my next post: Dell XPS M1330, the story doesn’t end

Now the Michael Dell was more cunning than any beast of the field. And he said to the people “Have the computer retailers indeed said that You shall have any laptop you want, just come to our store?”
And the people said “Yes, Circuit City, Best Buy, CompUSA, Sony and Apple have said we can pick from any of their laptops and will receive them within 72 hours if not immediately”
Then Michael Dell said “You will not surely receive a laptop from these stores in 72 hours. They fear that if you order from the great DELL, you will learn what service and courtesy and honesty is really like, and would never purchase from a retailer again”. So the people were convinced and called on the great Michael Dell to provide them laptops of blue, green, black, white, pink with all the nice things they wanted.
Then the people went to their friends and said “See what the great Michael Dell has done? We have ordered our laptops from him and he speaks honestly, with courtesy and service. Why his great laptop is the one you must have. Order one today and Michael Dell will deliver it in less than 2 weeks.”
So the people went to the great Michael Dell and ordered their laptops in masses.
Then July 23rd came and the people awaited the arrival of their laptops. And the great recording was found on their phone from Michael Dell. “Why people, so many of you love the great laptops that my workers must be diligent to provide. These great laptops are on the way. We will ship them on July 28th.” So the people sighed with relief and went away satisifed. Why, the world was created in 7 days, surely the great Michael Dell could make the laptops in 5.
But some remembered the retailers promises “we have laptops in stock, come see our product” But the cunning Michael Dell said, “Why, I will give you next day shipping when my diligent workers are done making your laptop.” and the people were satisifed again.
Then July 28th came and the people raced home from work to look at their status. It was with dismay that the great Michael Dell had left another message on the phone “we regret to inform you that our workers are diligent, but messy with paint. But to have the perfect laptop you must wait until August 3rd. To help you, we will put you on priority ship status. This puts you ahead of all the others, waiting for their great laptops.” But you see, Michael was the most cunning of the beasts, and he knew that priority shipping means nothing when nothing ships.
Now the people were dismayed, and again looked at the retailers. But August 3rd was only 6 days away, so they waited again. They wanted to understand what was going on with the great Michael Dell’s workers, so they found neat ways to contact the great Michael. They used the “chat with CSR” or dialed the phone number for CSR. But after waiting for hours with no one answering, finding themselves 15th in line to chat with a CSR for 2 hours, they went to be and wept with frustration, falling into terrible slumber where dreams of Sony and Apple and Acer and Toshiba danced through their heads.
Then on August the 3rd the people rushed home again. For surely the great, honest, courteous, service oriented Michael Dell would not fail to ship their great laptop. But when they reached their home, they found a message from the great Michael “I’m sorry but my workers have lost the white paint, the green is fading, blue is hard to see, and the FTC says I must get an email or phone call from you before I can ship your great laptop. If you agree to this, I will ship your great laptop on August 28th.”
Oh the anger of the people swelled against Michael. But like sheep that he knew they were, they sent the emails consenting to the August 28th. The people started placing phone calls to the number provided by Michael Dell’s to speak with his workers but they went unanswered for 1 hour and 20 minutes. The people’s children went off to college, crying for their great laptops.
Now the people await, the SEC awaits too (what’s that about anyway, something not right with what DELL says in writing besides delivery promises?)
I hope the mighty, great Michael Dell keeps his promise this time. If not I hope the great Michael Dell and his company fold into bankruptcy, with trials and convictions of great magnitude where they can find friends behind the bars of prison.
And I thought I was cunning—- THE SERPENT

A whole new community has been born — of people awaiting their XPS M1330s. A people of hope. A people of dying hope. A people anxiously scouring websites for news of the imminent arrival of a notebook that is acquiring mythical status, for myths are born of unseen realities; and nothing has been less seen than an XPS M1330. There are flashes, of course - a web photo here, a YouTube gnome fondling it there - but does it really exist? Can it be said to exist, when a man orders it in July, waits a week, and then is told it is delayed until the last week in August (today!), and then, as he peers at the road, he learns from India that the parts that were due to arrive just a few days ago have been again delayed and he must wait until … October. But what is October? What is anything? Who are we? A man is mortal, and cannot live on hope; and an XPS M1330 cannot, surely, exist — not when all the evidence points against it. Dell? The word is but ashes on the tongue.
