Using the Samsung Blackjack as a Modem (Tethered Device)

with 12 comments

AT&T BlackjackThe Samsung BlackJack phone distrubted by AT&T can be used as a modem to connect a computer to the internet. This can be done through the USB cable that comes with BlackJack. However, this feature must be turned on in the phone. Complete the following to enable the USB port to act like a modem when tethered to a computer:

Step 1. From the phone complete the following:

  • Select Start.
  • Scroll down and select Settings.
  • Scroll down and select Connections.
  • Scroll down and select USB.
  • Scroll to Modem and press Done.

Step 2. Connect the phone to the laptop. You will be prompted to install drivers to support the Samsung CDMA device. In Vista, you can allow windows to search and install the drivers from Windows Update.

Step 3. Configure a dial-up connection on the laptop. (https://cingular.atgnow.com/cng/tutorials/KB41982.html)

When the USB connection is configured to be used as a modem it cannot sync with ActiveSync or Windows Mobile Device Center.

Data charges do apply and apparently the DataConnect Unlimited plan at $59.99/mo is required. I currently have the PDAConnect Unlimited plan at $39.99/mo and it does not support “Tethered Devices” per a conversion I had with at&t tech support.  So, I was never succesful in getting connected to the internet.

  1. According to Sansung, Microsoft and ATT the Blackjack does not work as a tethered modem to a windows VISTA PC as there are no drivers that currently support the USB Vista ports. Perhaps a future release will support it. Please correct your information above.

  2. When I tried this, I was able to get a driver downloaded automatically from Windows Update for the Blackjack. That being said, I was never able to connect to the internet because AT&T said I was on the wrong data plan.

  4. I still can’t get the dumb phone to work as a modem. I use the *99# dial up, but this only works in New York City for me. No where else when i am traveling, even when I am on ATT 3G signal else where. Go figure.

I tried posting instructions on what I did here:
    http://www.searchoctane.com/blackjack-2-internet-sharing-tether.htm

in case that helps anyone. But how did i get a number that works in other places in the country?

  5. Why use it as a modem when you can use it as a gateway? Turn on Internet Sharing in /windows/IntShrUI.
Plug your device to usb port, connect to mediaNet, your laptop will recognize a new lan and you can surf as desired. I’ve done this on XP SP3 and Vista SP1.

  9. internet sharing is not in a folder. to use internet sharing click on control panel / network connections/ left click once on the internet connection to select the connection you would like to share/ then right ckick / select properties / click on advanced tab at the top / check the box that says allow network users to connect through this internet connection. then your now sharing internet to use from another device such as a cell phone etc. another way to do it is using bridging internet connections. That isthe way I tther multiple devices such as multpile network devices like xbox and tivo etc.

  10. what about vista on wm6?

i’ve flashed to wm6 and updated windows mobile device center, but vista does not seem to recognize the blackjack as a modem.

i’ve tried connecting through media net like i did in XP but can’t find anything about internet sharing. the shortcut i had in xp + wm5 is gone and vista doesnt let me explore the phone to create a new shortcut, it just errors out explorer every time.

now it doesnt even recognize when i plug it in even after setting the usb connection back from modem to media net.

should have just kept XPsp3 it worked great. vista = garbage
